A boy aged six who remained home alone was rushed to the hospital in an alcoholic coma. In the absence of his parents, the child found a bottle with alcohol in the fridge and drank from it. Contacted by IPN, head of the Emergency Admissions Section of the Mother and Child Institute Victor Shcarevnea said the boy was given first aid and is now out of danger. However, he will remain under the supervision of doctors.
According to Victor Shcarevnea, such incidents happen when the parents leave alcoholic beverages within the children’s reach, which is very dangerous as such cases can end in death.
Lidia Dolghieru, lecturer at the State University of Medicine and Pharmaceutics “N. Testemitanu”, who heads the Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Department of the Mother and Child Institute, said the child went into a coma and this means that he was in a very serious state. “The longer the coma is, the more serious are the effects on the nervous system of the child because more neurons are being destroyed,” said the doctor.
The alcohol affects the nerve cells. The effects of alcohol on children’s health are felt gradually and result in loss of memory and a low level of intellectual development.
