Child hospitalized after drinking fuel oil
A boy aged one from Balti town was rushed to the hospital after he drank fuel oil when left without supervision. Ala Condrea, head of the Balti Municipal Hospital’s Emergency Admissions Section, has told Info-Prim Neo that the boy was hospitalized with irritation of the mucous membrane of the stomach and all the organs through which the fuel passed.
The incident happened when the child’s mother was doing the cleaning in another room. The boy found the bottle with diesel fuel and took several swallows. The woman found her child vomiting. At the hospital, the boy underwent lavage. “The doctors intervened on time. The boy is now out of danger, but he will be continuously supervised,” said Ala Condrea.
According to her, the poisoning with fuel oil can be very dangerous. The substance can get into the blood and thus the person will suffer general poisoning of the body. In the house, there are often different toxic substances that can cause poisoning, including detergents, medicines, and bleaches. These substances become very dangerous for the child’s life and health when accessible. Therefore, they should be kept far from child’s reach, while the children should be under permanent supervision.
The study of the knowledge, attitudes and practices concerning home accidents of persons who look after children aged 0-5, which was made by the REPEMOL Project in 2011 within the “A Danger-Free Home for your Child!”, shows that only 25% of the parents keep the bleaches, detergents and disinfectants locked. Thus, many children are exposed to the risk of poisoning themselves.
