Chess Academy's StarNet team wins Moldovan Cup

The Moldovan Chess Cup was won by the team of the Chess Academy of Moldova StarNET on May 8. According to the academy chairman Viorel Iordachescu, the team name includes the names of two institutions that collaborated both in material and team structure matters, Info-Prim Neo reports. The competition gathered 6 teams of 7 members each: the State University of Moldova team (USM), the Free International University of Moldova (ULIM), Meteor and Perfect teams, girls’ team Caisa and the team of the Chess Academy of Moldova StarNET. The latter team included international grandmaster Viorel Iordachescu, grandmaster Vladislav Nevednichy, international master Boris Itkis, Moldova’s new champion Iulian Baltag, Anatolii Zaiarnii from Comrat, Moldova’s U20 champion Valerii Iovcov and European U12 vice champion Nichita Morozov. “It was a playoff system. We played three matches and eliminated three strong teams. In the second round we faced Meteor, a team of international masters and grandmasters and in the final round we met Perfect, a team with such grandmasters as Viorel Bologan. We won with a narrow score of 3.5 to 2.5”, said Viorel Iordachescu. The Cup victory will allow the Chess Academy of Moldova StarNET team to participate in the European Champions’ Cup this year. This is the second consecutive champions title for the Chess Academy of Moldova StarNET team.
