A march commemorating the Chernobyl victims has taken place on April 26 in Chisinau. On the day when it’s 22 years since the catastrophe, members of the Chernobyl Society laid flowers at the monument to Steven the Great, then they headed for the Roses Valley Park for a meeting in front of the monuments erected to the victims. Tudor Capatana, the director of the Society, has told Info-Prim Neo, that the people, having participated in diminishing the consequences of the accident of 1986, now cope with numerous hardships. The main problem is that the medicines are too expensive. “We ask for raising our pensions, as we can hardly afford 80% of the money needed for medicines,” he said. The most painful problem is the one of the children born with different malfunctions after the blast. There are 1,769 of such children now. 55 children died because of related illnesses. Galina Balmos, the Social Protection Minister, recently stated the state undertook a series of measures to better the situation of Chernobyl liquidators. Now the participants and certain relatives of theirs benefit of different state aid. 2,700 Moldovans having been mobilized to counteract the catastrophe’s consequences are registered.
