Charges against Veaceslav Platon dropped. Maia Sandu’s reaction

The prosecution on May 28 dropped the charges against Veaceslav Platon in the case in which in April 2017 he was sentenced to 18 years in jail for bank fraud. The prosecutor reached the conclusion that Veaceslav Platon didn’t commit the offense of which he was accused and asked to resume the investigation so as to identify the real culprit, IPN reports.

“Taking note of the prosecutor’s ordinance, the court announced the hearing closed and ordered to put off the judicial debates until June 1, 9am,” the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said in a press release.

President Maia Sandu commented on the decision, saying Platon’s grouping poses a threat to the state security. “Its actions, on the one hand, can seriously affect the financial stability of the Republic of Moldova and, on the other hand, undermine the state institutions and the country’s economy. The swiftness with which the prosecution dropped the charges against this grouping is extremely worrisome. We will analyze the prosecutor’s ordinance so as to see the legality and reasonableness behind this dubious decision that scandalizes society,” Maia Sandu posted on Facebook.

Veaceslav Platon was arrested in July 2016. In April 2017, the Chisinau City Court sentenced him to 18 years in jail for swindle and money laundering in very large amounts that caused damage of over 800 million lei to Banca de Economii. On May 18, 2020, Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo said the case started against Veaceslav Platon was fully fabricated and a procedure to review the sentence will be initiated. This way, after spending four years in jail, the sentence of 2017 was suspended on June 15, 2020 and Veaceslav Platon was set free.
