Charges against person who claims he is owner of €1.5m dropped

The investigation into the smuggling of €1.5 million that was found hidden in a truck this April goes on. Earlier, the case started against the truck driver was sent to court, while the charges against the person who asserts that he is the owner of the money were dropped. There are no other suspects or accused persons in this case for now.

Contacted by IPN for details, the chief of the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases Ion Caracuian said that when the investigations started, it was determined that the driver was involved in the transportation and smuggling of this money into Moldova. “After obtaining evidence, we could charge this person and later sent the case to court, which is to pronounce on his guiltiness or innocence,” stated Ion Caracuian.

According to him, steps were taken to identity the persons involved in the ordering and transportation of the money to Moldova. A person who claimed that this money belonged to him appeared then. “The person was classed as a suspect and was questioned. The statements made by this person could not lead to the identification of elements of an offense and the charges against him were thus dropped,” said Ion Caracuian.

He also said that the money was transmitted to the Crime Assets Recovery Agency, which transferred it to the accounts of the state treasury.
