The significance of the new mayoral elections in Chisinau is huge. Those who will neglect this fact are the first that risk losing, political analyst Petru Bogatu stated in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.
The analyst said the Socialists do not neglect the importance of the elections, but these are disregarded by the leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS) Maia Sandu, who recently stated that the elections in Chisinau are rather an exercise for the parliamentary elections. “They are indeed an exercise for the parliamentary elections, but not only. They have great importance at the national level, both for the given parties and for the given candidates,” stated Petru Bogatu.
According to him, there are four favorites among the applicants for mayor in the current campaign prior to the local elections: the representative of the Socialists Ion Ceban, acting mayor Silvia Radu, candidate of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase, who is supported by the PAS, and the representative of the National Unity Party (PUN) Constantin Codreanu.
Analyst Corneliu Ciurea said each political player takes into account the parliamentary elections and wants to profit from the mayoral elections in Chisinau so as to have a better path in the legislative elections. In the local elections in Chisinau, Ion Ceban is a well-shaped pole of the left, who is sufficiently powerful to reach the runoffs. Silvia Radu, who enjoys particular sympathy from the central power, represents another pole. On the unionist segment, an interesting struggle is witnessed between the Liberal candidate Valeriu Munteanu and the PUN candidate Constantin Codreanu. “Andrei Nastase is another pole, but we should admit that he didn’t manage to become the common candidate of the right. The fact that he is surrounded by other minor candidates is not a big problem, but he will have to also confront Sergiu Tofilat in this campaign,” stated the analyst.
The new mayoral elections in Chisinau municipality will take place on May 20, 2018.
