Chances for signing gas agreement with Azerbaijan increase

Negotiations continue on possible supplies of Azerbaijani gas to Romania, Deputy Energy Minister of Azerbaijan Kamal Abbasov said in the working meeting of the Azerbaijan-Romania intergovernmental commission, IPN reports, quoting media from Baku.

Different energy projects are in the focus of Azeri and Romanian companies after Azerbaijan, on December 31, 2020, for the first time in history, exported natural gas to the European market through the Southern Gas Corridor.

With direct access to the European market, Azerbaijan has diversified its export opportunities. The Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which is the European leg of the Southern Gas Corridor, will annually supply 8 billion cubic meters of gas to Italy and 1 billion cubic meters of gas to Greece and Bulgaria.

The Republic of Moldova is also making effort to purchase Azeri gas. Earlier this year, Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spînu, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, took part in the eighth Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council in Baku.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Andrei Spînu met with the Azeri Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov, who said that his country has the potential needed to increase the exports of Azeri gas and to extend the Southern Gas Corridor.

“The Republic of Moldova has real chances of buying natural gas from Azerbaijan. We will ultimately obtain the diversification of the gas supply sources. I do not want to give time limits, but I guarantee that during the next few years the Republic of Moldova will have diversified sources of energy,” Andrei Spînu said recently in a TV program on TV8 channel.
