Challenges filed in last elections were of a poor quality, study

The challenges submitted in the last elections were of a poor quality. The authors of these could not specify the object of the challenge, the violated rights and the requested solutions, says a study by the Association “Promo-LEX” concerning electoral disputes in Moldova during the parliamentary elections of November 2014 and the local general elections of June 2015, IPN reports.

The study authors underline the necessity of additionally training judges to implement the electoral legislation before the start of the electoral period and during it. They point to a low number of challenges filed by election runners.

The election contenders are encouraged to more often use the legal ways of settling the arising disputes and to develop their skills so as to present the cases in court in an appropriate way.

The president of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Alina Russu said the study results represent real support for the activity of the interested subjects before the October 30 presidential elections. “The examination of electoral conflicts or disputes in the electoral period is a very important activity because the democratic and free character of the elections depends on the promptness and correctness of this process,” stated the official.

Within the study, there were analyzed 78 challenges submitted to the CEC in 2014 and 70 challenges filed in 2015 as well as over 1,400 electoral cases examined by district courts and Appeals Courts.
