Chairman of Balti district electoral council resigns

Stanislav Sorbalo, chairman of the Balti district electoral council, resigned on May 4 in protest at the Central Election Commission's decision whereby the Balti electoral authority is obliged to register three independent candidates rejected in a previous meeting, Info-Prim Neo reports. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Stanislav Sorbalo said he denies the Commission's accusations that the Balti district electoral council exceeded its authority and broke the law. “It is not clear for me how we can register a candidate who presented falsified documents and how persons who are abroad or who do not exist in Moldova could put their signatures on the list,” said Stanislav Sorbalo. According to him, the Balti district electoral council started to verify the documents on the basis of Article 43 of the Election Code. “We question the authenticity of about 80% of the signatures collected by the applicants. I do not want to play the role of a clown in a circus directed by somebody. If there were persons from Switzerland, France or Germany in my place and saw the lists, they would lose consciousness. If I ignore certain violations today, I will have to ignore more irregularities tomorrow and then the election outcome in general,” said Stanislav Sorbalo. Stanislav Sorbalo was elected chairman of the Balti district electoral council on April 19.
