The Billie Jean King Cup international tennis competition will be held for the first time in Moldova and will have a high level of organization. The national team enjoys all the necessary facilities to achieve great performances. Arena Chisinau has a suitable playing field for such competitions. The tournament can also be watched online. The President of the National Tennis Federation of Moldova, Ceslav Ciuhrii, emphasized that several countries expressed their desire to host this event. Despite being located in the immediate vicinity of a country at war, Moldova managed to prove that it is a safe location and can organize tournaments for professional tennis players, said Ceslav Ciuhrii during a press conference on Thursday.
“We are very lucky because now we have such a venue as Arena Chisinau where we can play. That place looks great, there are enough parking spaces and that helped us a lot in organizing this competition. I want to thank the team, because my team is more in charge of this organization and it is a very big thing, especially as we have had seven tournaments back-to-back. The last one - the Championship of the Republic - ended on Sunday and we did not manage to get out of one, we started with another, especially since it is an enormous responsibility, being an international competition of such magnitude. Everyone looks at us with high expectations”, said Ceslav Ciuhrii.
Asked how the athletes who will represent our country are motivated, the Federation president mentioned that the tennis players have a high sense of patriotism, and financial motivation was not the main thing. “They all said ‘yes’ when we asked them to participate and there were no conditions imposed. The premiere will take place after the competition and I’m sure the girls will be satisfied”, said Ceslav Ciuhrii.
Although the matches will be livestreamed on YouTube, the organizers are counting on the physical presence of supporters at Arena Chisinau. And the captain of the team, Olga Cosîc, expressed her hope that supporters will turn out in big numbers.
Tennis player Daniela Ciobanu said that several experienced athletes from Armenia, Cyprus, Finland will participate in the tournament. Even with this fierce competition, the Moldovan team Moldova is determined to win. “It is a competition where team spirit prevails, individual performance alone is not enough”.
The Billie Jean King Cup will take place June 17-22. It is the largest annual international team competition in women’s tennis in terms of the number of participating nations.
