Cernauti town marks 600 years

The town of Cernauti celebrates 600 years of the first attestation in documents during October 5-8. The town was certified during the reign of Alexandru cel Bun in 1408, Info-Prim Neo reports. Vitalie Zagrea, editor-in-chief of Radio Ukraine International's Romanian Service, has told Info-Prim Neo that cultural-artistic activities are being held on the Day of Cernaut, including the 19th edition of the international festival “Bucovina Meetings” that brings together artistic groups from Ukraine, Romania and Poland. Groups representing the 80 national minorities in Bucovina perform on the streets of Cernauti. The represented ethnic groups set up exhibitions of flowers, give concerts and present traditional dishes. All the old buildings in the town were renovated on the occasion of the anniversary. All the singers that are native of Cernauti held a concert in the evening of October 5 on the Central Stadium of the town. Among these were Sofia Rotaru, Aurica Rotaru, Ani Lorac, Iarenciuc Brothers, Ion Bobul, etc. The international, literary-musical festival “At the Prut on a Piece of Homeland” is held as part of the festivities. Among the participants are writers from Romania, Moldova and Ukraine like Arcadie Suceveanu, Mihai Moraras, Nicolae Dabija, Ion Cozmei, Ion Margineanu, Viorel Dinescu and the folk group “Crenguta de Edera” led by Maria Iliut. The conference “Romanian Philology at the Cernauti University: history pages (1875-1908)” took place at the University in Cernauti on October 6. Different kinds of musical festivals are held in open air on improvised stages in Cernauti, while artistic groups and national societies sum up their work. The festivities will continue until October 8 and will end with fireworks.
