Starting with 2019, he has established relations of cooperation with researches in the Republic of Moldova. These relations intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Schekman conducted studies regarding the pandemic, the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the efficiency of vaccine shots.

In 2013, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering the machinery regulating vesicle traffic through cell membranes – a process through which cells organize their activity and communicate with the environment. The same year, the Republic of Moldova was mentioned on the portal of Nobel Prizes by professor Randy Schekman, who in his biography made reference to his Bessarabian genealogical roots. The parents of his mother were from Lipcani town of Briceni district, where the grandparents of our protagonist were buried. This makes him state that it is his holy duty to visit our country.

The agenda of professor Randy Schekman’s visit includes the presentation of a plenary scientific report entitled “Genes, cells and discoveries in basic science and disease” at the International Scientific Conference on Nanotechnologies and Biomedical Engineering, which will be held in Chisinau during September 20-23, 2023, and the holding of a public lecture entitled “Path to the Nobel Prize” witch is intended for lyceum and university students and young researchers.

While in the Republic of Moldova, the famous scientist Schekman will pay a visit to Lipcani village of Briceni district. This will be “the first return to the native land of a member of his family the past 100 years”.
