Center-right opposition wins Elections in Greenland

The center-right opposition has won the general elections in Greenland, according to results after counting more than 90% of the votes. The election was dominated by former U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to acquire this autonomous territory of Denmark, reports IPN, citing the BBC.

The Demokraatit Party, which supports a gradual approach to independence, secured 29.9% of the votes, surpassing the Naleraq Party, which obtained 24.5% of the votes—another opposition party that wants to immediately begin the process of separating from Copenhagen and strengthening relations with the United States.

"Greenland needs us to be together in a time of great external interest," Demokraatit leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen told local media. "Unity is needed, so we will enter negotiations with everyone," Nielsen added.

"We respect the election results, the will of the people. We look forward to hearing what the parties have to offer in negotiations. We will work hard," Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Bourup Egede, wrote in a message on social media.

Greenland is an autonomous region of Denmark with a population of 56,000. The island governs its own internal affairs, but decisions on foreign policy and defense are made in Copenhagen.
