Center on Haltei street hosts 50 people

The center of accommodation and orientation for people without a permanent residence, situated on Haltei street, in Chișinău, was nearly full since temperature drops occurred in the previous days. Center psychologist Marcela Dița told IPN that on the night of November 21 and 22, 51 people were accommodated, while 45 people where hosted there the day before that.

According to the psychologist, during the cold period of the year, 5 to 6 new people come in daily. On some days, depending on the weather, the Center is visited for the night by 10 to 15 new people. Marcela Dița said that about 30 people choose to stay at the Center during the day, while others leave in the morning and return in the evening. The psychologist said that the beneficiaries who have nowhere to go and do not work, can be hosted at the Center and can receive help from the Center’s team of specialists, who offer a wide range of services free o charge.

According to Marcela Dița, the beneficiaries are fed three times per day, have the opportunity to shower, change their clothes, receive hygiene packages, etc. Moreover, the team of specialists, which includes a social worker, a psychologist and a lawyer, provide assistance in order to solve their issues. Similarly, three nurses provide necessary medical care round the clock. The psychologist said that people without shelter arrive to the Center either accompanied by the police, by ambulance or come alone. Sometimes, other citizens call and report cases when homeless people find themselves in vulnerable situations.

Marcela Dița said that, due to a pressing need for clothes and footwear, the institution organizes collection campaigns, this year being the sixth annual campaign. According to the psychologist, there are days when 30 people bathe at a time and all have to change their clothes, while the Center's possibilities of buying clothes and footwear are reduced.

Between November 1, 2019, and March 31, 2020, the Center will provide accommodation services round the clock. The accommodation capacity during the cold period of the year will be one hundred people. Earlier, officials from Chișinău City Hall announced that, in order to cope with the large flow of people, repair works have been carried out in living rooms and bedrooms. Additionally, a number of items, such as quilts, sheets, wipes, hygiene products, underwear, stockings, slippers, etc., were purchased.
