The Center for Reform in the Judicial System was officially opened at the National Institute of Justice on May 20. It was set up on the initiative of a group of judges who will promote and will actively contribute to the reformation of the judicial system, IPN reports.

President of the Supreme Court of Justice Mihai Poalelungi said this center is important for the judicial system as it will stimulate the implementation of reforms. In the event, the participants were able to familiarize themselves with the reform acceleration mechanisms. It was underlined the necessity of involving civil society by launching public debates on the proposals for amending legal acts concerning the judicial system.

Aneil Singh, head of the Operations Section of the EU Delegation to Moldova, said that since 2011, the Government of Moldova has undertaken a number of commitments towards the legal system and the EU provided funds to support these efforts and this support was propelled by the idea that a democratic society depends on the rule of law. From quantitative viewpoint, there were adopted many laws, but the implementation process is slow.

The head of the Association of Jurists for Human Rights Vitalie Nagacevschi said that this center must become an appropriate platform for discussing and promoting all the reforms and for analyzing proposals. “Using this platform, together with the authorities, the judiciary and civil society, we will achieve beneficial results in promoting the justice sector reform,” he stated.

The Center for Reform in the Judicial System is supported by the Supreme Court of Justice and the Supreme Council of Magistrates, being supported technically by the EU–funded project “ATRECO – Increased Efficiency, Accountability and Transparency of Courts in Moldova”.
