The Central Election Commission (CEC) considers that the law on local public administration should be amended so that it allows extending the terms-of-office of the mayor and of the Local Council of Corjova village in Dubasari district. CEC president Eugeniu Stirbu addressed a relevant application to the Parliament. Under the law on local public administration, the mandates of the local councillors can be extended by organic law only in case of war of catastrophe. CEC considers that it is impossible to hold free and democratic elections in Corjova under the circumstances created by the secessionist Tiraspol regime. Therefore, the mandates should be extended, CEC president’s application says. CEC member Nicolae Garbu expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that the application was sent to the Parliament before it was examined by all the Commission members. Other members said that CEC should have examined all the possibilities first, and then address the petition to the Parliament. At the same time, they said the application signed by the Commission’s president should not be withdrawn. The local elections in Corjova village held on June 3 and 17 failed because the secessionist Transnistrian forces blocked the entrance to the polling station. A number of villagers and policemen were ill-treated by the Transnistrian militia, deployed in large numbers in the settlement. They also ravaged the polling station. CEC scheduled rerun elections for November 11, but cancelled them afterwards at the request of the local public administrations of Corjova and Dubasari.
