The Central Election Commission (CEC) presented the model of a polling place outfitted with new equipment for the November 30 parliamentary elections. Each polling place will have by at least two fixed ballot boxes and one mobile ballot box, IPN reports.
Ludmila Lupascu, head of the CEC’s Elections Management Division, said there will be three types of ballot boxes. The largest one, of 80 liters, is designed for at most 1,000 voters. The box of 45 liters is for at most 500 voters, while the third one, of 21 liters, is mobile and will be used in mobile voting. The polling booths were standardized and are 50 cm*30 cm*170 cm in size. The booths for persons with locomotor disabilities are 50 cm*30cm*150cm in size. The CEC recommended setting up polling places at the first floor so as to facilitate the access of persons with special needs and of elderly persons.
The polling places will have by two computers for implementing at national level the State Register of Voters, which is a component part of the Automated Information System “Elections”. A number of 4,200 laptops were purchased for the purpose. On the election day, the operators will check the personal data of voters and will register online their participation in elections. When the results are totaled, they will swiftly send the information to the CEC.
CEC president Iurie Ciocan said that 22,400 persons have been involved in the organization of the elections. He thanked the development partners for providing financial support for buying the new equipment.
The joint fund of Moldova and the Government of Norway within the UNDP’s Democracy Program was used to purchase 6,940 polling booths, 10,000 ballot boxes and other accessories, including for persons with special needs. A sum of US$436,270 was spent on this. A number of 2,066 polling places will be established for the November 30 legislative elections, 95 of which abroad.
