CEC of 2005-2010 conducted largest number of legislative elections

The current Central Election Commission (CEC) has organized the largest number of legislative elections. Since 2005 until present, it invested three legislatures, Info-Prim Neo reports. The present members of the CEC were designated by the legislative body before the local elections held in the municipality of Chisinau in 2005. General local elections followed in 2007. On April 5, 2009, the CEC organized the first parliamentary elections, while on July 29, 2009 – the early legislative elections. On September 5, 2010, the Commission conducted the first constitutional referendum for modifying Article 78. The last parliamentary elections were held on November 28, 2010. The CEC’s term of office expired on November 10, 2010. As the legislature was dissolved, the new members of the CEC could not be elected. The Central Election Commission is composed of nine members. One of them is designated by the President of Moldova, while the rest eight by Parliament, by observing the proportional representation of the majority and the Opposition. The Commission’s composition is confirmed by a Parliament decision, by a majority vote. If the CEC’s term expires in an electoral period, the Commission continues to work until the end of this period and the appointment of the new members, but for not more than 90 days.
