CEC has not yet adopted a position on PLDM’s proposal to curtail election campaign

The Central Election Commission (CEC) has not yet taken an official position on the PLDM’s proposal to shorten the election campaign from 60 to 30 days. In other countries, the election period cannot be shorter than 60 days, CEC president Eugen Stirbu said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. Eugen Stirbu told the reporters that before submitting the bill to the Parliament, it should be discussed first by the parties of the governing alliance and by experts. According to him, in most of the countries the election campaign lasts for minimum 60 days. “The election campaign for the legislative elections of July 2009 lasted for 45 days and we encountered many difficulties and legislative constraints owing to the shorter period,” Eugen Stirbu said. The parliamentary group of the Liberal Democratic Party intends to submit a bill that provides for the curtailing of the election campaign from 60 to 30 days. The leader of the PLDM faction Mihai Godea said the bill could be adopted immediately after the MPs return from vacation, i.e. after the September 5 constitutional referendum.
