CC will uphold decision to suspend Chirtoaca, pundit thinks

The Constitutional Court will uphold the prosecution’s request to have Dorin Chirtoaca suspended from the post of Chisinau Mayor, and the Socialist initiative to hold a referendum on sacking him is fairly likely to happen, thinks the political pundit Denis Zacon of the Open Government Institute.

Speaking at a talk-show on 10TV, Denis Zacon said that if the referendum is successful, a vote to elect a new mayor should be held in four months.

“However, the situation is quite uncertain, because this referendum to remove the mayor, while already at an advanced stage, might never happen. The court might give us a negative answer in just a few days. At the same time, people could vote against the mayor’s removal simply by not showing up, even if this doesn’t mean they are happy with him”, thinks Zacon.
The pundit went on to add that all the political parties will be ambitious enough to field their own candidates in the potential snap election and that people in Chisinau will yet again vote based on geopolitical criteria rather than the candidate’s competence.
