Rabies is a preventable viral disease most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system of mammals, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death. It can spread to people and pets if they are bitten or scratched by a rabid animal. It’s almost always fatal once symptoms appear.
Sixteen cases of rabies in animals have been reported in Moldova so far this year. Among humans, the last case of rabies was recorded in 2019 in a child from Goianul Nou village of the municipality of Chisinau.
