Cars from Lithuania smuggled into Moldova

Three cars stolen in the EU were illegally brought into Moldova, from Lithuania. The vehicles were estimated at over 1 million lei. The grouping’s leader aged 30 was arrested. He is from a suburban settlement of Chisinau and officially works in the field of car repair and sales in Moldova, IPN reports.

The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said the young man coordinated a group of Moldovans who, together with Lithuanian citizens, in 2020-2023 registered and then sold cars after falsifying the information about the vehicles. The members of the illegal group also falsified and illegally used vehicle registration certificates and customs documents and performed unauthorized mechanical changes.

The police carried out searches in Chisinau and in suburbs and found and seized the cars that had been stolen in the EU, including parts of other vehicles stolen in the EU. They also found blank registration certificates, photocopies of official documents and other papers with signs that they were counterfeit. Other cars found during the searches are to be examined.

The law enforcement agencies in Moldova are carrying out investigations in cooperation with counterparts from EU member states.
