Carriers in Soroca stop strike action

The problem of public transport in the municipality of Soroca was solved. The carriers decided to stop the strike and accepted to return to routes on February 4. Mayor of Soroca Lilia Pilipetski has told IPN that as a result of discussions held with carriers during several days, it was agreed to return to the rise in fares in a year.

The mayor said the situation was the most difficult on February 1, on the first day of protests.  Several units of transport ran on routes on February 2 and 3. From today, the carriers will work as usual, but the discussions on higher fares will be resumed in a year.

Lilia Pilipetski noted that the transport commission early this morning had a meeting with transport firm managers. The municipal authorities reiterated that the passengers on public transport are mainly vulnerable people, pensioners and students who will not cope with the higher fares. The mayor’s office pledged to come up with other measures to support the carriers. The local tax for them was already cut from 1,200 to 100 lei a month.

Vasile Maxim, the representative of carriers, confirmed for IPN that the strike is over as the mayor convinced that the moment is not opportune for increasing fares. The carriers throught about the inhabitants of the municipality and didn’t fully go on strike. Fewer units of transport ran on routes on these days.

A trip by bus or minibus in the municipality of Soroca costs 2 lei. The carriers asked to raise the fares to 3 lei.
