Carriers announce halt in regular passenger routes for Feb. 23

The regular road passenger transportation service will be suspended on February 23, representatives of the Employers Association of Road Transport Operators announced, saying the measure is taken in protest at the restrictions imposed by the National Extraordinary Public Health Commission concerning the number of allowed passengers, IPN reports.

“For a day, the regular road passenger transportation service will be suspended all over the Republic of Moldova, including in private transport (over 50%) in the municipality of Chisinau. The decision comes in reaction to the imposition of fines for the violation of provisions of decision No. 45 of the Commission,” stated the Employers Association.

“We apologize to the passengers for the caused inconvenience, but reiterate that we do not have another way for fighting the institutional incompetence of public functionaries.”

On February 15, the National Extraordinary Public Health Commission decided to limit the number of passengers in railway and road, municipal, district and inter-district transport to 50% of the transportation capacity.

“Regrettably, the authorities, especially the National Extraordinary Public Health Commission, are detached form the everyday life in the Republic of Moldova and do not want to notice that the decisions adopted by them do not contain solutions, but create new problems, besides those caused by the pandemic. The restrictions imposed in public transport can have sense when the persons who travel to or from work are offered a sustainable and accessible alternative,” the Association said the previous days in an open letter addressed to the acting Premier.
