Car owners stage protest outside Government building

Several drivers who own cars with plates from Lithuania and Bulgaria, protested on Saturday, April 9, outside the Government building against the latest amendments to the Customs Code, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to these changes, owners of vehicles with Bulgarian or Lithuanian plates are obliged to get them out of the country after three months. The vehicles can re-enter Moldova only after 9 months. Protesters say they got the opportunity to buy better and cheaper cars abroad and now are suddenly obliged to get rid of them because of the new law. Andrei Dascal, one of the participants, says he bought his car from Bulgaria, as he couldn’t afford one from Chisinau. He thinks that the amendments were adopted at the request of influential persons who have car businesses in Moldova. Anatol Sarbu brought his car from Lithuania because he got a real bargain. He never thought he would face such restrictions. The decision was taken overnight and car owners are in a difficult situation. Until now, owners of cars older than 7 years, imported from Lithuania and Bulgaria, had to get the cars out of the country after 3 months, but could return with them the same day.
