Capriana Monastery to reopen on August 28

The central authorities announce that Capriana Monsatery will reopen on August 28, as the repair works were finished. PM Vasile Tarlev asked on August 22 the persons in charge from the Government “to make everything necessary to prepare this event at the highest level”. He mentioned that the monastery “has a historical importance for the country and the whole society contributed to its reconstruction”, without mentioning the total expenditures for its refurbishment. The reconstruction campaign started in 2003 in light of the deplorable situation of the monastery after the collapse of the soviet regime. All the renovation works, both in churches and monk cells were performed under the direct supervision of the Presidency and Government which allotted high sums of money for the reconstruction works. Capriana Monastery is situated not far from the Straseni town and represents the architectural ensemble, which includes the Church of Virgin’s Assumption (1545), Churches of Saint Nicholas (1840) and Saint George (1903). In a picturesque forest area, only 40km north - west of Chisinau, one can find Capriana Convent – one of the oldest in Moldova (1429). For a long period of time it was the headquarters of Moldova’s bishop. It was founded by great Moldovan Rulers such as Stefan the Great. The chronicler Eftinie and one of the first poets of Moldova, Chiprian also lived here. The biggest convent library in Moldova was situated in Capriana, it was endowed with precious gifts by different leaders. Closed and dilapidated during the post-war period, it was only reopened again in 1989, becoming a symbol of national revival.
