Capital City’s administration still to elect chairman of the municipal council and deputy mayors

The Municipal Council has not elected again the chairman of the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) and deputy mayors at the last week meeting because a councilor member of the majority coalition was absent. Councilor of the Christian Democrat People’s Party, Eugenia Starcea, did not attend the meeting and the majority coalition made up of representatives of the four factions could not elect the respective officials without her vote. At the beginning of the meeting, both the Communist Party faction and the Social Democrat one pointed out to the need to tackle the respective issues, as well as to appoint the district heads. But these issues were not included into the agenda. Some councilors told reporters that the reason for that was the lack of required number of votes. Asked of what might happen if the required number of votes is not gathered at every meeting, the leader of the Liberal Party and of the respective faction, Mihai Ghimpu, said that the most important thing is to solve out the people’s problems. He stated that CMC is operating anyway, and decisions have been made so that there are no problems at all. CMC was supposed to elect the chairman and deputy mayors on August 2, but Mihai Ghimpu withdrew his candidacy to the position of chairman when it was decided to elect the latter by secret vote and Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca suspended the procedure of forwarding candidacies to the position of deputy mayors, after the candidate of the Liberal Party did not gather the required number of votes.
