The relations between Chisinau and the authorities of Gagauzia have improved owing to a more sincere and efficient dialogue, Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu stated in a program on Publika TV channel in the evening of June 29. He didn’t rule out the possibility that escalations can appear owing to the legislative elections in the autonomous territorial unit, but assured that the central authorities are ready to intervene, IPN reports.
“Progress is made in the relations with the Gagauz authorities owing to dialogue and communication. As long as there was no dialogue and communication, particular things could not be clarified. Those from Gagauzia had the perception that they receive less money into the budget and that not enough attention is paid to road repair and other issues at the local level. It happened so because the necessary information about the amounts contributed by each district and the allocations from the state wasn’t provided. Experts from ministries were called and these made things clearer. A compromise was reached as to the amendment of the legislation. We lacked communication,” stated Andrian Candu.
He noted that within the common platform between Parliament and the People’s Assembly of Comrat, created by his decision, members of both of the legislative bodies visited autonomous regions in such states as Italy, Finland and the UK and studied examples from outside the country. “We saw how other autonomous regions work. Some in Gagauzia even wondered whether they do not enjoy greater autonomy,” said the Speaker.
According to Andrian Candu, the legislative elections in Gagauzia are coming and some of the exponents will definitely try to formulate the political message in the struggle with Chisinau, but the authorities will take steps. “We will be prudent, attentive and tolerant so as to calm them down and will find other instruments. Those who break the law will be shown Penal Code articles saying what separatism, treason and all the rest are. With those who are more civilized and who are patriots of this country, we will work based on democratic rules,” he stated.
