A well will be built at the monument “Candle of Gratitude” in Soroca this month. The works are projected to be finished in September, the head of Soroca district Victor Sau has told IPN. The official said the idea was put forward by writer Ion Druta. It will be put into practice with donations by writers and with the assistance of economic entities and the authorities.
The district’s head said they wanted the well to be built up, near the candle, so that the people could drink water after mounting the 600 stairs. But, it turned out that it’s not possible as there is no water at such a height. Thus, the well will be constructed at the bottom of the stairs.
The well is now being designed. It will be probably built from wood. “We want it to be attractive as many tourists visit this place,” said Victor Sau. There is no well at the monument now. There is only a spring that is situated 200 meters from the Candle.
The expenditure estimate for constructing the well will become known next week.
The monument “Candle of Gratitude” was erected on a cliff above the Nistru River. It is dedicated to all the destroyed monuments of the Moldovan culture. The idea of building such a monument belongs to the famous classical writer Ion Druta. The monument was inaugurated on March 27, 2004. It represents a chapel in the form of a candle that is 29.5 meters high.
