Candidates for Chisinau mayoralty decide how to run – independently or on party lists

Some of the candidates for posts of local elected officials in Chisinau, who initially decided to run independently, will represent political parties and will run on their ticket, while other candidates didn’t change their mind and will compete as independents. The reasons were formulated in the talk show “Politics” on TV7 channel, IPN reports.

Civic activist Olega Brega could become the candidate for Chisinau mayoralty of the Party “Democracy at Home”, which last week withdrew from the Electoral Bloc “European People’s Platform of Moldova – Iurie Leanca”. Brega said he gathered the signatures needed to run for the post of municipal councilor, but does not manage to garner those needed for running for the mayoralty too. “It is very difficult or even impossible to collect 10,000 signatures during two weeks. That’s why I decided to run on the list of candidates of the “Democracy at Home” Party,“ he stated.

Social activist Victor Chironda said he decided to take part in the local elections for the Chisinau Municipal Council on the list of the Electoral Bloc “European People’s Platform of Moldova – Iurie Leanca”. “I would have had chances of being elected municipal councilor if I had run independently. But the conditions for the independents are difficult, even if they win the seat. A team, funds and programs are needed to obtain something. I decided to run on the list of this bloc because their conceptions correspond to my conceptions,” he stated.

Activist Vitalie Voznoi, who heads the organization “My dear city”, will run on the list of the Electoral Bloc “People’s List”. Voznoi said that the bloc will make public the name of its candidate for the mayoralty of Chisinau on May 12.

Though he admits that it is hard to garner the necessary number of signatures, the head of the Center of Initiatives and Public Authorities Monitoring Ion Dron wants to run as an independent for the post of mayor of Chisinau. “The parties represent those small parts that form the system, which, for its part, puts a burden on each of us. The current system must be destroyed, but this cannot be done by running on party lists. Does the one-actor theater contribute less to culture than the theater with more actors?” he asked.
