Candidate for mayor suspects ruling party of starting a calumny campaign against him

The final stage of the election campaign is marked by a completely immoral and irresponsible calumny campaign which targets the reputation of the candidate for Chisinau Mayor Vladimir Filat, he told a news conference on May 28. Filat showed in support of his statements articles from several newspapers, as well as advertising material, where he is portrayed as a negative person who ran illegal businesses in the past. The cited source said that he requested the Central Election Commission and the General Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the source of these materials and respond by June 1. Filat said that he knows the sleeping partner behind these materials. He further stated he knows the printing office where the materials were published and their cost. Taking into consideration the spent resources, only the Party of Communists affords such actions. At the same time, Filat said that the accusations against him have no legal ground, as there are no penal proceedings against him. He recognised that he had businesses, including trade in cigarettes, but they were all legal. The candidate added that the ruling party feels that it loses control and it will lose the elections in Chisinau, because it “sometimes acts without thinking about the consequences”. Vladimir Filat said that despite these facts, he will continue to run a civilised and fair campaign without accusing and making personal attacks against anyone.
