Cancer - the second cause of mortality after cardiovascular diseases

In the Republic of Moldova, oncologic diseases are the second leading cause of mortality after cardiovascular diseases. The most frequently diagnosed malignant tumors are breast, colorectal, prostate, skin and tracheal cancers, which together account for 52.6% of all malignant tumors. The data are presented by the National Agency for Public Health in the context of the World Cancer Day, marked annually on February 4, IPN reports.

According to the ANSP, mortality from malignant tumors in 2023 amounted to - 242.2 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, compared with 226.7 cases in 2022.

Specialists note that one third of cancer deaths are caused by tobacco use, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays, asbestos, etc. Also, hepatitis B and C viruses, human papillomavirus (HPV) substantially increase the risk of cancers such as cervical and liver cancer.

And worldwide cancer is the second leading cause of death, accounting for almost 1 in 6 deaths. The cancer burden is expected to increase by about 77% by 2050.

"Importantly, up to 3.7 million lives could be saved each year with appropriate prevention strategies, early detection and timely quality treatment," the ANSP says.

The risk of developing different types of cancer can be reduced by avoiding tobacco and nicotine-containing products and reducing alcohol consumption. Healthy eating and maintaining an optimal body weight, as well as regular physical activity, are also needed. Vaccination against HPV and hepatitis B is also indicated, as well as avoiding exposure to ultraviolet and ionizing radiation, etc.
