Experts and specialists in the field could not reach a consensus as to whether the post of minister of defense should be political or not. The subject was discussed in the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Expert in security matters Iurie Pantea said the position of defense minister should be apolitical and the candidate must be fielded by the head of state. The trust in the army is not so important. The army enjoyed increased confidence compared with other institutions because there were no disputes “The servicemen should not become involved in politics. What will the army gain from all these political duels? In the current situation, the army can be identified with a party,” he stated.

Constitutional law expert Vitalie Catana said it’s not a sin to form part of a party, but Vitalie Marinuta has to explain his defection from one party to another. “I criticized the seven who left the Liberal Party as they left it in an inappropriate way. Unfortunately, the seven adopted a wrong approach and didn’t discuss with Dorin Chirtoaca, affecting thus the party. They should better design a new political project,” he said.

He also said that the post of minister of defense is inevitably political, while the experience of other countries shows that people from outside the army can manage it. A minister of defense should be a good manager and promote certain views as regards the military art.

Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta said that there is a lot of work to be done at the Ministry and a deputy minister is needed to deal with the social sector. “I d not yet have a candidate, but I will find somebody who has experience,” he said, adding that the interest in the army in Moldova is not great and thus they encounter difficulties in obtaining funds for this area. He stressed that the army is an institution that enjoys the greatest trust and the assertions that it is badly managed are mistaken.
