Cameraman Mihai Sambra fined 4,000 for slander denunciation

PRO TV's cameraman Mihai Sambra was recognized by a Chisinau court as guilty of slander denunciation and will be a fine of 4,000 lei, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the press unit of the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO), the PRO TV cameraman signed an agreement with his prosecutor in which he recognizes his guilt. The Chisinau prosecutors considered Mihai Sambra's denunciation about his alleged being taken into custody, on October 8, 2008, by Chisinau policemen, and his alleged being beaten up by them. The prosecutors' probe find that Mihai Sambra's statements about the alleged torture on the part of the policemen were not confirmed, being refuted by the statements of a number of witnesses, reads the GPO's release. The prosecutors found that Sambra influenced certain people to make erroneous statements in his favor to forge his whereabouts on October 8 and the circumstances of being injured. In October last year, PRO TV Chisinau reported that its cameraman Mihai Sambra was severely beaten up in the evening of October 8 in the offices of a Chisinau police commissariat. He was picked by a police patrol from a street in Chisinau and was taken to the police where, he said, he was ill-treated by four policemen and was allowed to leave but the next day in the morning. A number of NGOs and political parties supported then PRO TV, stating that the rulers pursue to close the station. Later Mihai Sambra confessed of making false statements, and PRO TV withdrew its complaint from the GPO.
