Call to protect environment made through exhibition of caricatures

Deforestation, environmental pollution, shortage of natural resources are the ecological problems reflected in a series of caricatures by Margareta Kitskatyi, the editor-in-chief of the satire and humor magazine "Chiparuș plus". The satirical creations illustrate a dystopia to which the people's harmful actions on the environment gradually lead and convey a central message – let's take care of everything that surrounds us, the author of the exhibition hosted by the Parliament Building told IPN.

The head of the Association of Caricaturists of the Republic of Moldova Margareta Kitskatyi said that since the 1980s, she has been dedicated to satirical creations, showing the negative and positive sides of society in a humorous way. The author of the exhibition believes that, through caricatures, she can draw attention to important social issues, including those related to environmental protection. According to the cartoonist, the message of her works, presented under the title "Ecology – the chance of the third millennium", is current and accessible to all ages, regardless of the language spoken, and is summarized in the importance of protecting the environment.

The author of the exhibition noted that environmental problems have persisted for a long time, but in the third millennium there was an opportunity to remedy the situation, to become aware of the magnitude of the issues and to try to stop the harmful actions of humans on nature and the environment. Otherwise, the fourth millennium may no longer exist. The young people are better informed about ecological problems and they thus can get actively involved in solving them. "In one of the paintings, a small boy is planting a tree, but there are people with axes nearby, ready to cut it down. The child plants, but the adults destroy. This is the satire: the child teaches adults not to destroy and to protect forests," exemplified the author of the exhibition.

Margareta Kitskatyi said that the protagonists of the paintings are doctors, politicians, people on whom the social life depends to a large extent and from whom citizens should take an example. But these works illustrate examples of behaviors that should be avoided in order to prevent such actions in reality. It is necessary to change priorities, from armaments and wars to environmental protection.

The paintings were made in different periods, starting with 2001 and 2003, but most of them are recent works. The cartoons were presented a few years ago at the European Parliament, where they were highly appreciated, as in the country, the author of the exhibition confessed.

The works will be exhibited in the Parliament Building until the end of November. They can be admired by all those who want after registering for a visit on the legislature's website.
