Call to institute Day of Winemaker and Winegrower in Moldova

The Employers Association of the Tourism Industry of the Republic of Moldova, the Sommelier Association and the Tourism Development Association suggest instituting the professional Day of Winemaker and Winegrower in the Republic of Moldova, which would be celebrated on the second Sunday in November.

In a news conference at IPN, Sergiu Manea, president of the Employers Association of the Tourism Industry of the Republic of Moldova, said the proposal was formulated in connection with the promotion in Moldova of World Wine Tourism Day so as to celebrate the specialists working in the field, given that the national Wine Day hasn’t been celebrated the last few years and given the importance of the wine industry for the national economy and the role and responsibility of the experts from the field.

According to the National Office of Vine and Wine, during the first nine months of this year, the wine companies in Moldova won a record number of over 1,000 medals at international contests. The talent and efforts of the winemakers should be supported. The higher is the number of tourists coming to Moldova, the larger is the rise in wine exports to countries from where tourists come. Sergiu Manea noted the pandemic affected the global wine industry and Moldova’s wine industry in particular, due to the logistical constraints, the reduction in the demand on traditional markets or the annulment of actions to promote the wine. The Moldovan winemaking and winegrowing sector started to slowly overcome the systematic crisis caused by export bans.

World Wine Tourism Day was for the first time was promoted in Moldova on November 14 this year. The event involved wineries and other important tourist facilities. The wineries in Moldova opened their doors to meet guests from the country and abroad with selected wine and dishes, directly from the producer. An information tour was staged for representatives of the media. There was presented and fully covered the Guinness Records Route that was inaugurated in 2020. The route includes the visiting of tourist attractions, a thematic seminar and interactive events.

Mileștii Mici Winery inaugurated a collection wine niche that will form part of the largest wine collection in Moldova that was added to the Guinness World Records Book. Cricova Winery inaugurated a new reception building. The guests cut the red ribbon and tasted classical sparkling wine. Later, Cricova presented a new menu that is designed to satisfy the refined tastes of guests from all over the world.

Ana Grecihina, coordinator of the Sommelier Association of the Republic of Moldova, said the national wines are of a high quality, but the process of producing them implies huge work done by multiple persons. That’s why the Sommelier Association considers a Day of Winemaker and Winegrower should be instituted in Moldova so that the people on this day could come closer to the winegrowers and could show their respect for them. The Association is ready to also suggest instituting the National Sommelier Day that would be celebrated together with the International Sommelier Day at the start of summer.

Viorel Miron, president of the Tourism Development Association, noted that owing to the winemakers, thematic routes can be staged to promote the national, cultural and historical heritage at the local level. The process offers a consistent identity to the tourist attractions in Moldova. Therefore, support for the winemakers is absolutely necessary.
