Call for mobilization to protest

The people who protested against the uninominal voting system that was adopted by Parliament in the first reading on May 5 called on the people to mobilize and take to the streets. They also suggested setting up a resistance committee, made up of civil society representatives, which will organize protests in the Great National Assembly Square. The protesters said that by the uninominal voting system, the Democratic leader Vlad Plahotniuc wants to get rid of jail, IPN reports.

Deputy head of the Politico Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Alexandru Slusari said that a civic protest will be staged. “We will consider how to attract more people to this protest. It will be a civic protest, not a political one,” stated the politician.

Economic expert Sergiu Tofilat also made a call for mobilization. “Let’s travel to villages and mobilize the people, and to explain to them what’s going on. Talk to your relatives and tell them that if we do not mount mass protests to show that we are against this voting system, we will live for four more years in this mess. Let’s use all the possible instruments – protests, calls to foreign development partners – so as to prevent the modification of the electoral system,” stated Sergiu Tofilat.

Communist MP Inna Supac also urged to mount a civic protest, reminding there is an official political document signed by six political parties that are against the replacement of the current electoral system. The power should be changed, not the electoral system. This change should be done peacefully so as to create conditions for free, fair and democratic legislative elections.
