Cahul pays homage to poet and political detainee Andrei Ciurunga

A performance of poetry dedicated to the 87th birth anniversary of Andrei Ciurunga, poet and political prisoner of the Romanian communist regime, took place at the Cahul-based Theoretical Lyceum “Mihai Eminescu” on October 25. Professor Alexandru Tecuci, president of the Cahul ASTRA Division “Iulia Hasdeu” Mrs. Doina Focsa, people who personally met the poet Andrei Ciurunga after the Revolution of 1989 attended the performance, the Cahul radio station Univers FM informs, quoted by Info-Prim Neo The guests spoke about the physical and moral torture to which the poet was subjected during the hard detention years and about the necessity of giving the name of the poet to a Cahul street. Alexandru Tecuci said that the Union of Writers of Moldova submitted a corresponding application to the Cahul City Hall, but no answer came yet. Attending the event, the councillor of Cahul Nicolae Dandis assured the public that he will raise this initiative at one of the P Poet Andrei Ciurunga was born on October 28, 1920 in Cahul town. In 1944 he took refugee in Romania, where he was sentenced to ten years in jail because he did not want to conform to the communist ideology. He died on August 7, 2004.
