Cahul hosts Documentary Film Festival for Social Change

“Power” is the theme of the second Documentary Film Festival for Social Change MOLDOX that will take place in Caul on September 23-28. The public will be able to see films made in 26 countries. Eight films were made by lyceum students from Cahul at a workshop.

In a news conference at IPN, MOLDOX Festival director and president Max Carlan said “Power” was chosen as the theme because everyone needs power, but we sometimes forget that we have it. Twenty full-length films awarded all over the world and ten short films will be shown at the festival. Besides the screenings, there will be held panel discussions on such subjects as “Power of the Woman”, “Power of Oppression”, “Power of Passion” and “Power of Religion”.

The festival will be opened by four national productions. The soundtrack will be replaced by music performed live by the Symphonic Orchestra of the National Philharmonic “Sergey Lunkevich” that is conducted by Ilie Croitoru Rotila.

“The chosen films are of A or B classification. This means that they were selected at international festivals and were tested through the public. We want to show them on a big screen in Moldova because they would probably never reach our country or the TV set,” stated Max Carlan.

The second component of MOLDOX is a laboratory with four documentary film workshops called MOLDOX LAB. These are intended both for beginner filmmakers and for professionals and will last for six days.

MOLDOX Association member Olga Cortac anticipates that the number of spectators this year will be higher. The organizers provide free transport from Chisinau and from neighboring communities for all those who want to go to the festival. “Cahul is the native place of MOLDOX. When you enter Cahul, you get the impression that everyone there speaks about MOLDOX. Cahul turns into the capital of documentary film,” she stated.

MOLDOX is organized by the Association “MOLDOX”, SVENSKA FILMSTUDION, CONTACT-Cahul Center and the Association for Creative Development with support from the Swedish Institute, the U.S. Embassy in Moldova, the Romanian Cultural Institute, the Cahul mayor’s office, the German Cultural Center Akzente of Chisinau, the Goethe-Institut Romania, East Europe Foundation and the National Cinema Center.  The festival’s budget this year is of €70,000.
