Cahul-Giurgiulesti rail line will have a minor impact on environment, ecology minister says
The construction of the railroad track Cahul-Giurgiulesti will have a
Minor impact on environment, only 175 square meters in the Lower Byk Preserve will be affected, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Constantin Mihailescu told reporters on Friday.
According to the official, the necessity of this rail line is beyond question. The 50 km long track will link the largest southern city of Cahul to Giurgiulesti town, passing through other 10 localities.
“The rail line offers us access to the Black Sea, and will enable farmers in the region to deliver their production across Moldova, as well as to Ukraine or Romania, to Galati”, Mihailescu underlined.
The minister says the railroad track will be built in the space between the wetlands and the slope of the region, which will protect the settlements from floods. Mihailescu pointed out that water pollution will be minimal, as the fuel to be used for the engines will be diesel oil, which has a lower environmental impact.
Trees will be planted along the rail line. The 7 houses and 2 stadiums on the route will be pulled down and the owners recompensed.
The construction of the Cahul-Giurgiulesti rail line will last until late in November 2008.
