Cahul district head Marcel Cenușă, was placed under judicial control, a form of bail, for a period of 60 days. This was ruled by the Cahul District Court, even though prosecutors requested that his house arrest be extended for another 30 days.
Three other suspects in the case, including two public servants and a businessman, saw their preventive measures commuted as well. The prosecution said the rulings are unjustified and will be appealed.
On April 18, prosecutors requested the Cahul District Council to suspend Cenușă from office. No decision has been taken on the request so far.
Cenușă and eight other suspects are charged with public sector procurement fraud, with damages estimated at over 1 million lei.
