Cabinet endorses proposal punishing corrupt voters

The Cabinet has formally endorsed a legislative proposal introducing sanctions for voters who solicit or accept electoral bribes. This includes money, goods, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, food products, services or other benefits received during the electoral season, on election day or the day before to favor or disfavor a certain electoral competitor.

“Electoral corruption seriously affects democracy, the credibility of the electoral process, and also the future of our country,” said Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru during today’s Cabinet meeting.

According to her, the bill proposes to streamline the national mechanism for investigation and contraventional sanctions for passive corruption actions. The project provides for fines between 25,000 and 37,500 lei. The legislative initiative is to be approved by Parliament.
