Cabinet denounces two CIS agreements on Armed Forces

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the denouncing of the agreements of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States on Armed Forces and Border Troops and, respectively, on Strategic Armed Forces, IPN reports.

The agreement on Armed Forces and Border Troops envisions the solving of defense and security problems, including the protection of the borders of the CIS member countries. The agreement on Strategic Armed Forces envisions the solving of problems related to the direction of Strategic Armed Forces and joint control over nuclear weapons.

The Ministry of Defense said the documents that were signed in Minsk on December 30, 1991 haven’t been implemented by the Republic of Moldova so far.

In the same meeting, the Cabinet denounced the agreement on the promotion of a coordinated policy on standardization, metrology and certification, which was signed in Moscow on March 13, 1992, and the protocol to supplement and amend the given agreement, which was signed in Moscow on June 20, 2000.

In this connection, the Government’s spokesman Daniel Vodă said that if an agreement is not useful, it is denounced. However, before denouncing CIS agreements, the interests of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova are taken into account. “In many cases, the Republic of Moldova also has bilateral agreements with states that form part of the CIS. Therefore, there is no need to have an agreement within the CIS,” noted Daniel Vodă.
