Cabinet denounces agreements on creation and work of MIR TV channel

The Cabinet approved the denunciation of the agreement on the creation of the interstate television and radio company MIR that was signed in Bishkek in 1992 and the agreement on the international law guarantees for the free and independent work of MIR that was signed in Ashgabat in 1993. This way, the representative office of MIR in Moldova will be struck off the registers of the State Registration Chamber as a legal entity, IPN reports.

“Such a move will help to save financial resources and will reaffirm the Republic of Moldova’s commitment to protect the national and regional audiovisual space so as to ensure information security,” said the Government’s secretary general Artur Mija.

The Bashkan of Gagauzia Irina Vlah said that such a decision is incorrect as the TV channel MIR has an audience of millions and is watched in tens of CIS countries with which Moldova has good economic and cultural relations. She noted that the country’s economic and other interests can be promoted through this channel.

Currently, the common TV channels for the CIS space “Mir TV” and “Mir 24” do not have a broadcast license issued by the Audiovisual Council and aren’t media service providers in Moldova.

Also, the Moldovan authorities recently refused to finance this TV channel. About 40.3 million lei was paid from the state budget to the representative office of MIR in Moldova in 2000-2022.
