Cabinet approves new bill to harshen punishment for drunk driving

The punishments for persons who drive under the influence of alcohol will be made harsher, while the possibilities of freeing from criminal liability will be limited. The Cabinet approved a bill proposed by a group of MPs, who suggested amendments to the Criminal Code, the Penal Procedure Code, the Contravention Code and the law on road traffic safety, IPN reports.

According to Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, the authors of the bill propose adjusting the normative framework for establishing a more efficient mechanism for combating drunk driving and for punishing those who driver under the influence of alcohol.

It goes to harsher punishments and limitation of the possibilities of freeing from criminal liability for active repentance, change of the situation and repair of damage or exemption from the rule of paying half of the fine if the person repeatedly commits the same contravention in the course of the same year.

The minister noted that a number of bill improvement proposals will be taken into account and the bill will be correlated with a bill to amend the Criminal Code and the Penal Procedure Code which was given a first reading by Parliament.
