Cabinet agrees to replacing commemorative stone in Railway Terminal square with monument

The Government decided to substitute the commemorative stone in the square of the Railway Terminal in Chisinau with a monument to the victims of the deportations organized by the Communist regime, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The annexation by the USSR of the territory located between the Prut and the Nistru had tragic consequences for the population,” said Minister of Culture Boris Focsa. Over 11,000 families were forced to leave the country on the night of June 13, 1941 alone. The repressions continued after the war as well. More than 35,000 people were deported to Siberia on the night of July 6, 1949. In 1951, 2,600 Jehovists were forced out of the country during the operation North. According to the Black Book of Communism that appeared in Paris in 1997, the Moldovans deported as special colonists totaled 94,792. The idea of erecting a monument to the victims of deportations was put forward at the end of the 1980s, but a contest to select the sculptor was heldonly in 2010. The costs of making the monument and laying out the adjoining area will be covered by the Chisinau City Hall.
