The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) confirms that the airline Wizz Air decided to suspend all its flights to and from the Chisinau International Airport as from March 14, 2023. The operator invoked the safety and security of the airspace in the region. The CAA noted yet that the airline’s decision creates uncertainty, IPN reports.
The Authority said that together with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, it has permanently cooperated and discussed with representatives of the airline, informing continuously about the procedures applied to ensure appropriate aviation safety and security.
“The decision taken by Wizz Air generated uncertainty given that the airline on February 14 asked to approve the schedule of flights for the summer season and this was approved by the CAA on Monday. Following a risk analysis, the state institutions determined that the flights in the national airspace can be operated safely by following a number of procedures and the sudden decision taken by Wizz Air is therefore regrettable,” the Civil Aviation Authority stated in a press release.
The institution also said that it will take all the necessary measures to ensure the airline returns to the Chisinau International Airport as soon as possible and to also attract other low-cost airlines.
By a press release issued on Monday, Wizz Air informed that it will suspend all its flights to and from Chisinau from March 14 due to safety concerns. “Safety of the passengers and crew remain Wizz Air’s number one priority and following the recent developments in Moldova and the elevated, but not imminent, risk in the country’s airspace”, noted the company.
In this connection, MP Radu Marian said Wizz Air’s decision is strange as the risk level remained unchanged since the flights were resumed in Moldova last spring. According to him, the risk classification according to aviation standards remains “2A”, while the maximum risk classification is “5A”.
