CAA about closing of airspace: An object looking like a weather balloon was identified

The airspace of the Republic of Moldova was closed on Tuesday after a small object similar to a weather balloon was detected close to Soroca town, said the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), making reference to information received from the Ministry of Defense.

“Given the weather conditions and the impossibility of monitoring and identifying the object and its flight trajectory, in order to ensure the safety and security of citizens, the Interdepartmental Commission for Aerospace Management at 1:24pm decided to temporarily close the airspace,” stated the Civil Aviation Authority.

After the information was verified of any danger to the safety of citizens was excluded, the airspace was reopened close to 3p.m., at the suggestion of the Ministry of Defense.

The CAA said the national authorities acted strictly in accordance with the special procedures applying to such situations.

Moldova’s airspace was temporarily closed on Tuesday and the Civil Aviation Authority said that this was done as from 11:24pm. A number of airlines announced delays and cancellations of flights, IPN reports.
