Byk riverbed – real face of Chisinau residents
“What we see here is our real face,” Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said about the bed of river Byk. On Friday, the mayor went to Calea Basarabiei Street, near which the river flows, to discuss with the drivers and traders working there and convince them not to throw waste and clean up around them, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Though the area is cleaned by workers of the Green Spaces Association every year, the riverbed soon becomes littered again. The economic entities operating in the area deny responsibility. “The litter is dropped by drivers who park here illegally,” said Vasile Cacer, administrator of a local constructions material market. He said that if the trade in building materials directly from vehicles is banned, it will be clearer around and the riverbed will not be so dirty.
“It is a crime to throw garbage from the car on the roadside or in the river,” Dorin Chirtoaca said. He does not consider that the fines are a solution in this case. He thinks it is much more important to make the people realize the ecological danger to which they expose the capital city.
One of the drivers who spoke to the mayor, Vasile Ursachi, suggested placing more garbage bins and containers.
“About 150 employees of the Green Spaces Association are now working here. Seven trucks are transporting the waste,” said the Association's head Eliferie Haruta. “They will work during a week and will bring things in order.”
Cleaning works are carried out all over the municipality of Chisinau. The officials promise the capital city will be clean by Easter.
